  1 July 2024

On 1 July 2024, a Vice-President of the WIETE International Academic Advisory Committee (WIETE-IAAC), Professor Lucyna Nyka, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at Gdańsk University of Technology (Gdańsk Tech), Gdańsk, Poland, took over the presidency of this Committee, becoming its sixth President.

Lucyna Nyka (PhD, DSc) is a full Professor in the Faculty of Architecture at Gdańsk Tech. Her research interests focus on historical hydrographies, blue-green solutions for cities, water-related architecture and urban landscapes. She is involved in several transdisciplinary research studies on the urban environment and re-naturalisation of cities. She has published extensively on the topics of her research, and is the author, co-author and expert on many European research projects. She was recently involved in the H2020 SOS Climate Waterfront project focused on linking research and innovation on waterfront studies to face climate change.

Prof. Nyka is a member of the Architecture and Urbanism Committee at the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN); for several years was one of the Vice-Presidents of the WIETE-IAAC, based in Melbourne, Australia, and is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Valencia International Biennial of Research in Architecture (VIBRArch), to be held in November 2024.

Most recently, in a year-long celebrations of the 120th anniversary of the foundation of Gdańsk Tech (the current name of an old technical institution), Prof. Nyka was an instigator and one of the three Guest Editors of a special edition of the WIETE international journal, the World Transactions on Engineering and Technology Education, Vol.22, No.2, which was dedicated to the Faculty of Architecture. Furthermore, together with Professor Krzysztof Wilde, Rector of Gdańsk Tech, was a Guest Editor of a special edition of the WIETE’s Global Journal of Engineering Education (GJEE), Vol.26, No.2. This issue of the GJEE is dedicated to the whole Gdańsk Tech to demonstrate university-wide activities, developments and achievements in engineering and technology education; however, one can also observe a considerable input from the Faculty of Architecture.

In welcoming the new President, we wish to thank Professor Maria Jolanta Żychowska for her year-long presidency, and welcome her as the WIETE-IAAC Immediate Past President.

Staff, associates and members of the WIETE wish Prof. Nyka good health and a successful Presidency of the WIETE-IAAC.
