My husband, Zenon Jan Pudlowski (Pudłowski), Professor and Director of the World Institute of Engineering and Technology Education, passed away on the 4 February 2025, unexpectedly and suddenly, leaving me - his wife, business partner, co-operator, friend and admirer - in complete shock and disbelief.
Zenon was an engineer, distinguished academic, educator and publisher, ME (Academy of Mining and Metallurgy, Poland), PhD (Jagiellonian University, Poland), Dr dc (Donetsk), DTechhc(Caledonian, UK), Dr hc (STU Bratislava, Slovakia), Prof.hc (TPU Tomsk, Russia), Prof.hc (Gdańsk Tech, Poland).
He started his academic career in Poland as a lecturer in the Institute of Technology at the Pedagogical University of Kraków (1969-1976), then was a researcher at the Institute of Vocational Education, Warsaw (1976-1979), and later worked as an adjunct professor in the Institute of Pedagogy at Jagiellonian University, Kraków (1979-1981).
After his arrival in Australia, he worked in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Sydney (1981-1993), where, in later years, he was a senior lecturer. Between 1994 and 2009, he was an Associate Professor, Professor and Director of the UNESCO International Centre for Engineering Education (UICEE) in the Faculty of Engineering at Monash University, Melbourne, and was Associate Dean (Engineering Education) of the Faculty of Engineering (1994 -1998). He was an adjunct senior research fellow in the Faculty of Arts at Monash University, Melbourne (2009–2014).
His research interests included circuit analysis, electrical machines and apparatus, implementation of computer technology in electrical engineering, software engineering, methodology of engineering education and industrial training, educational psychology and measurement, as well as human aspects of communication in engineering. His most recent passion was academic publishing in all its aspects which he realised within the WIETE.
His works have been published in books and manuals and in over 350 scientific papers, in refereed journals and conference proceedings.
He was engaged with several educational institutions across the globe. Zenon was the founder of the Australasian Association for Engineering Education (AAEE) (1989), and was its first Vice-President and Executive Director. In 1992 he was instrumental in establishing the International Faculty of Engineering at the Technical University of Łódź, Poland, of which he was Foundation Dean (1992–1995) and Professor (in absentia) (1992–1999). He was appointed Honorary Dean of the English Engineering Faculty at the Donetsk National Technical University in Ukraine in 1995, External Professor at Aalborg University, Denmark (2002-2007), and was an adjunct professor in the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology at Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois, US (2013–2016). In 2009, he was appointed Vice-Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Commonwealth Science and Technology Academy for Research (C-STAR), based in Chennai, India.
Zenon was a Fellow of the World Innovation Foundation (WIF), UK, and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia (until 2012). He was Foundation Secretary of the International Liaison Group for Engineering Education (ILG-EE) (1989–2006), and it’s Chairman for a period of time. He was elected a member of the Ukrainian Academy of Engineering Sciences (1997). Zenon was also a member of the UNESCO International Committee on Engineering Education (ICEE) (1992–2000).
His earlier awards include the inaugural AAEE Medal for Distinguished Contributions to Engineering Education (Australasia) (1991), and the Order of the Egyptian Syndicate of Engineers for contributions to the development of engineering education on both national and international levels (1994).
In publishing, he served as adviser, founder and editor. He was a member of the editorial advisory board of the International Journal of Engineering Education, the International Journal of Technology and Engineering Education, Botswana Journal of Technology, and the Australasian Journal of Engineering Education (AJEE) (editor-in-chief, 1989-1997). He was on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Electrical Engineering Education (1993–2005), and the European Journal of Engineering Education (1993–2005).
He was the editor-in-chief of the Global Journal of Engineering Education (GJEE), and the World Transactions on Engineering and Technology Education (WTE&TE) - both periodicals published by the WIETE.
He chaired and organised numerous international conferences and meetings, continuing this engagement until now.
With Zenon’s passing, the international engineering education community have lost an exceptionally talented, creative, energetic and dedicated partner, and I have lost the love of my life, my husband, my mentor, my dearest friend.
Farewell Zenon, your friends will remember you, and I will always love you.
